GREENVILLE, N.C. – Josey Weaver has been named an assistant coach for the East Carolina track and field and cross country programs, according to an announcement Tuesday by Director of Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft.
Â
"We are very excited to announce the hiring of Josey Weaver," Kraft said. "When we started this process, the biggest thing I was looking for was a fit. I am totally confident that we have found that fit in Josey. It became very evident when we met Josey on how sincere and genuine he came across to the hiring committee and to the student-athletes.
Â
"Josey understands how important the team concept is to our coaching staff and to our student-athletes. He ran for a great program at Western Carolina University that has been very successful over the last many years. Josey also has a great knowledge base of cross country and track and field. I am very confident that his passion and enthusiasm will be infectious and will be picked up by the student athletes in our programs. We are very excited to welcome him to East Carolina University and the Pirate Nation."
Â
Weaver arrives in Greenville off of a two-year stint as an assistant coach at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kan., where he mentored the distance runners and pole vault athletes. He was responsible for producing 14 All-America selections in 16 events, 42 All-Region honorees, 26 national event qualifiers and 12 regional champions as well as a two-time national runner up in the pole vault. In 2015, Weaver was named the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Central Region Coach of the Year for women's cross country as well as the Region VI Coach of the Year. Currently, three of his pole vaulters are ranked in the top six nationally.
Â
Last season, Weaver helped Butler to a third place national outdoor championship finish on the men's side while guiding the women to ninth place. The men also won both the indoor and outdoor conference and Region VI titles. In cross country, the Grizzlies captured the 2015 men's and women's conference titles while the women won the Region VI crown.
Â
The year prior to his time at Butler, Weaver served as an assistant indoor and outdoor coach at Polk (N.C.) High School where he coached the mid to long distance runners and pole vaulters.
Â
As a student-athlete at Western Carolina University, Weaver set the school records in the indoor track 5K and the cross country 8K. He earned a trio of All-Southern Conference honors, including first-team recognition as a junior. Weaver was also an Academic All-America all four years of his collegiate career.
Â
In addition to his coaching experience, Weaver worked as Instructor of Health and Physical Education at West Buncombe Elementary (2013-14) and North Buncombe Elementary (2014-15). He owns USA Track and Field Level I certification as well as certification by the USTFCCCA.
Â
Weaver earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from Western Carolina in 2012 before completing requirements for a Master of Arts in education from WCU in 2014.
