BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – Freshman Patrick Stephenson shot par-216 and paced the East Carolina men's golf team to a fifth-place finish at the 2016 Mountaineer Invitational, played at the par-72, 7,308-yard Pete Dye Golf Club on Tuesday.
The Pirates shot a 10-over 288 in the final round, finishing with a three round score of 16-over 880. They posted the second-most birdies of any squad in the 14-team field, 169.
Arkansas claimed the team title with an overall score of 6-under 858. Mississippi State finished second at 5-over 869 followed by Akron in third at 1-over 875. Host West Virginia ended up fourth, two strokes ahead of ECU, at 14-over 878.
Stephenson was the Pirates' top finisher and tied for ninth for his first career top-10 finish. He recorded 11 birdies in the 54-hole tournament. He opened the event with a 1-over 73 and then shot a career-low 4-under 68 in round two. Stephenson concluded the competition with a final round score of 3-over 75.
Redshirt junior Jackson Spires and freshman Blake Taylor tied for 17th at 3-over 219. Taylor tied Stephenson for the team lead with 11 birdies, while Spires led the Pirates with 37 pars.
Junior Tim Conover finished at 10-over 226 and senior Jack Sides posted a 54-hole total of 20-over 236. Redshirt junior Clay Brown, playing as an individual, carded a 14-over 230 in his season debut.
ECU returns to action in a week, when it travels to the Phoenix Invitational from Oct. 17-18 in Burlington, N.C.
