RALEIGH, N.C. – Junior Tim Conover posted a pair of 67s on the first day of competition at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate to enter the clubhouse tied for the individual lead, helping East Carolina men's golf to a five-shot lead over Kennesaw State in the team standings.
After 18 holes of play Conover was three strokes off the pace behind teammate Jackson Spires, who matched an ECU record with an opening round 7-under 64, tied for third-place. Conover opened the second round by birding two of the first four holes and was 3-under for the round with three remaining. He then sank his 12th birdie putt of the day, tops among all players, to move to 4-under and pared the final two holes to finish the day at 8-under 134.
Conover shares the lead with NC State's Jason McBride, who carded rounds of 68-66. A total of 23 players shot par or better Monday.
The Pirates completed the first round at 13-under 271, seven strokes ahead of second-place Kennesaw State, and then shot 5-under 279 for 36-hole total of 550. The Owls trimmed two strokes off ECU's advantage in round two, but three Pirates shot par or better during the afternoon to maintain the lead.
Senior Jack Sides is in position for his first career top-10 finish after scoring rounds of 68 and 71 to finish the day tied for fifth-place at 3-under 139. Spires is one-shot behind his teammate and tied for 11th at 2-under.
Freshman Blake Taylor carded a 2-under 69 in round two after shooting 1-over in the first round to end his day tied for 18th at 1-under. Freshmen Patrick Stephenson and Logan Shuping, playing as an individual, each finished at 5-over 147.
The Pirates are looking for their 12th team win under head coach Press McPhaul while Conover is seeking his first intercollegiate individual title. ECU will begin final round play at the 7,358-yard, par-71 Lonnie Poole Golf Course at 9:30 a.m., playing alongside Kennesaw State and Augusta.
