Two Pirates Compete At FINA World Championships

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Two East Carolina swimmers: senior Fran Krznaric and junior Esteban Araya competed amongst the world's best last week as they represented their home countries at the 2016 FINA World Championships in Windsor, Canada.

A native of Croatia, Krznaric was his country's top ranked 200 IM swimmer entering the world championships and finished 30^th. He also competed in the 200 backstroke and placed 42^nd.

Araya represented his home country of Costa Rica in a trio of events: 100, 200 and 400 IM. He finished 31^st in the 400 IM and placed 48^th and 49^th respectively in the 100 and 200 IM. He is currently ranked first in the 200 and 400 IM in his homeland.

"We are very proud of Fran and Esteban for their achievements last week," ECU Head Coach Rick Kobe said. "It is always exciting to have our athletes competing at the very highest level in front of the entire world."

Araya, Krznaric and their ECU teammates will resume the 2016-17 season Jan. 14 against Old Dominion at Minges Natatorium.
