September 01, 2016 | Cross Country
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina cross country program begins its 2016 season Friday, Sept. 2 at the Covered Bridge Invitational hosted by Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C.
Â
"We are really excited to kick off our 2016 Cross Country season this weekend," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "This first meet will be a very good test to see where everyone stands as far as their fitness level is concerned. There is a great deal of excitement and enthusiasm as we begin a new season."
Â
The Pirates are looking to improve their performance from a year ago at the Covered Bridge Invitational after the women placed fourth and the men finished seventh.
Â
ECU has a handful of returners leading the squad, highlighted by All-American Conference selection Jorge Montes on the men's side and all-conference honoree Caroline Reiser pacing the women's team.
Â
Montes did not run in last year's Covered Bridge Invitational but ended the season with a 14th-place finish at the American Athletic Conference Championship with a time of 24:30.21 in the 8K. His career-best 6,400 time occurred in 2014 as he crossed the finish line in 20:51.87 to put up the third-fastest mark in school history.
Â
Reiser looks to improve on her career-best time of 18:05.26 in the 5K this weekend. She ended up in 15th at the AAC Championship with a 6K time of 21:09.16 - the third best in program history.
Â
"I think everyone has to understand that it's a very long season and we as coaches have to make sure that both teams do the things that they have to do to be successful," Kraft continued. "Things like staying healthy, staying positive, being good teammates and making sure that we are improving each and everyday."
Â
East Carolina will compete with the host Mountaineers as well as Florida, Florida State, the University of West Florida, East Tennessee State, VMI, Less-McRae, Mars Hill and Southern Wesleyan.
