
Cross Country Readies For Adidas Challenge In Cary

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina men's and women's cross country teams will head over to Cary Friday evening for the adidas Cross Country Challenge at the WakeMed Soccer Park. The men's race is scheduled for 5:35 p.m. with the women's event slated to begin 30 minutes later.

ECU will compete against Campbell, College of Charleston, Elon, Florida State, Gardner-Webb, High Point, North Carolina Central, North Carolina A&T, NC State, North Carolina, UNC Greensboro, Virginia and Wake Forest.

"Both teams are very excited to be back in action after a week off," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "The competition that we are about to see this weekend will provide a very good test to see where we are at this point in the season. This is one of the early-season meets that we look forward to competing at each and every year."

The thing that we as a coaching staff are most excited about it this point is how much energy and confidence both men's and women's teams are competing and practicing with. We just hope that we can continue to improve each and every week."

The Pirates opened up their 2016 campaign two weeks ago in Boone, participating in the Covered Bridge Invitational. The women took fourth place while the men finished in seventh.

Sophomores Grace Sullivan and Victoria Cooke placed sixth and seventh as East Carolina's top two women's finishers. As for the men, sophomore Nick Ciaccia took 14th. Freshman Dean Abushouk was 44th in his collegiate debut.

Following this weekend's meet, the Pirates will host the annual ECU Pirate Invitational Sept. 23 at Overton's Lake Kristi in nearby Grimesland, N.C.
