BOONE, N.C. – The East Carolina cross country program kicked off its 2016 season Friday evening with participation in the Covered Bridge Invitational hosted by Appalachian State University. The women took fourth place in the 10-team field while the men ended up in seventh. The University of Florida men's and women's squads swept the team titles.
Â
"I thought this was a very solid opener for both the men and women," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "This is always a great meet to shake off the rust and see where everyone's fitness stands. A number of our ladies and men bettered their times from this meet last year by several seconds, which shows they have put in serious work this summer. We are going to continue to work hard in preparation of our next meet. I am excited for the future of this team."
Â
A pair of sophomores paced the women's side as Grace Sullivan and Victoria Cooke crossed the line in sixth and seventh place respectively with times of 18:42.02 and 18:47.91. Senior Sydney Teague was third for the Pirates and she turned in a 29th-place result by putting up a time of 19:38.09. The women finished just seven points behind third-place Florida State.
Â
As for the men, sophomore Nick Ciaccia came in 14th with a time of 20:42.61 and was followed by freshman Dean Abushouk who placed 44th in a time of 21:33.45.
