GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's tennis team completed the first tournament of its 2016-17 campaign by winning just shy of 80 percent of its singles matches and 85 percent of its doubles matchups in the ECU Invitational at the River Birch Tennis Complex.

Overall, the Pirates combined for a 19-5 (.792) record in singles action against opponents from Campbell, Appalachian State and North Carolina Central. Seven of ECU's players won multiple matches, while one player from each class posted perfect 3-0 marks, including senior Michelle Castro, junior Sarah Sarjoo, sophomore Annija Veinsteina and freshman Nastja Rettich.

ECU went 11-2 (.846) on the doubles courts, as Rettich and Maria Gomez went 4-0 as a tandem, while Betsy Zurawel and Meredith Smith compiled a 3-0 record as a unit.

The Pirates will continue its fall season at the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C., next Friday through Sunday, Sept. 30-Oct. 2.
