September 30, 2016 | Men's Basketball
GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The East Carolina men's basketball team took to the court this afternoon for the first official practice of the 2016-17 season.
The Pirates return three of their top four scorers led by B.J. Tyson. The junior guard led the Pirates in scoring last season with 14.6 points per game, which ranks fourth-most among returning American Athletic Conference players in 2016-17.
Senior Caleb White was second behind Tyson on the team in scoring with 12.5 ppg a year ago and finished sixth in the conference with 2.3 3-point field goals made per game. He enters the campaign ranked eighth on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,200 points and is on pace to end his career ranked in the top-five.
American Athletic Conference All-Rookie Team selection Kentrell Barkley is the only other returning player to average double figures last season. Barkley averaged 10.1 points and led ECU with 6.3 rebounds per game. He finished second among all league freshmen in rebounds and assists (3.0) per game.
Seniors Michel Nzege and Clarence Williams return as well.
The Pirates welcome seven scholarship newcomers to the lineup in addition to redshirt freshman Deng Riak, who received a medical redshirt after missing 24 games due to injury. Riak is one of three players on the roster listed at 6-foot-10 or taller. He joined by 6-10 junior college transfer Jabari Craig and 7-foot-1 Wake Forest graduate transfer Andre Washington.
The freshman class is composed of guards Elijah Hughes, Jeremy Sheppard, Raquan Wilkins and Shawn Williams. Williams must sit out the 2016-17 season in accordance with a NCAA ruling as does Isaac Fleming, who transferred to ECU after spending two years at the University of Hawaii.
The Pirates open the 2016-17 season with consecutive games inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum. ECU will host Grambling State on November 11 before welcoming North Carolina A&T for a November 14 tilt.
