GREENVILLE, N.C. – Former East Carolina pitcher Jharel Cotton became the second Pirate in less than a month to make his Major League Debut when took the mound Wednesday, Sept. 7 with the Oakland Athletics at Oakland Coliseum. Jeff Hoffman made his big league debut on Aug. 20 for the Colorado Rockies.
Four years after he was drafted in the 20th round (pick 626 overall) by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft, Cotton got the start against the Los Angeles Angels. The right-hander, who was traded to the A's on Aug. 1 from the Dodgers, allowed one run (earned) on two hits with three strikeouts and a pair of walks in 6.1 innings.
Cotton became the first A's starting pitcher to last longer than six innings and hold an opponent to two hits or fewer in his Major League debut since Porter Vaughan did it in 1940 for the Philadelphia A's.
After retiring the first nine batters he faced, Cotton gave up a leadoff single to Andrelton Simmons to start the fourth inning – just one of four Angles to reach base on the day. Over the next two frames, he pitched around a pair of walks before C.J Cron belted a solo home run in the seventh cutting the A's lead to 3-1.
"He made it look easy early on," A's manager Bob Melvin said of Cotton after the game. "You expect maybe a walk, couple of baserunners, have to pitch out of a jam early on before you get settled. That never happened. The most impressive thing was that he went right after them, used all his pitches and really didn't have any trouble spots early in the game."
Trouble spots were almost nonexistent during Cotton's outing and he earned his first Major League win thanks to the result. He also earned a warm reception from both his teammates and the Oakland fans upon exiting the game. "That was pretty special," said Cotton. "I saw everyone come in to congratulate me and that was a fun feeling."
Cotton becomes the 20th player in school history to see action in the Major Leagues. He is the sixth Pirate hurler since 2013 to make his debut joining Seth Maness (2013) Chris Heston (2014), Mike Wright (2015), Shawn Armstrong (2015) and Jeff Hoffman (2016).
