GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina track and field program begins its 2017 indoor season this weekend with participation in the Dick Taylor Carolina Cup Friday evening at the Eddie Smith Field House in Chapel Hill.
Â
The scored meet features not only the Pirates but also the host Tar Heels as well as Duke and NC State. The one-day event is comprised of 16 different events that will take place throughout the evening hours. The competition is slated to begin with the men's pole vault at 4 p.m.
Â
"We are very excited to get this season kicked off this weekend," Director of Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "The kids have worked very hard all fall and have put a lot of work in over the Christmas break, so we will see what the results are after this weekend. This indoor season goes very quickly, so it is of vital importance that we get off on the right foot starting this weekend."
Â
The Pirates are in their third season as a member of the American Athletic Conference and look to improve on seventh (men) and fifth (women) place finishes in last year's league indoor meet.
Â
ECU returns nine all-conference performers from a season ago in Adam Manns (discus), Stefano Migliorati (800m), Tamarack Bolden (4x100), Hakeem Horton (4x100), D'Ante Yarborough (4x100), Lauren Lubarski (high jump), Galissia Cause (shot put), Grace Sullivan (3000m steeplechase) and Aminah Ghaffar (heptathlon) as well as 10 of its 17 NCAA East Preliminary regional qualifiers – Bolden (4x100), Horton (4x100), Vincent Ragland (110m hurdles, 4x100), Yarborough (110m hurdles), Mohogany Baker (discus), Cause (shot put, discus), Lubarski (javelin), Amanda Salami (4x100), Cedrina Singletary (4x100) and Courtney Warner (100m, 4x100 relay).
Â
In the women's school record book, Cause has the top mark in the indoor and outdoor shot put while Ghaffar holds the top mark in both the pentathlon and heptathlon. As experienced upperclassmen, both athletes are legitimate threats to not only earn a spot on the podium in those events, but also win AAC titles.
Â
As for the men, a big strength of this year's squad should be its throwers. The quartet of Manns, Evan McCracken, Ryan Davis and Jalen Peterkin looks to score big this weekend in Chapel Hill as well as at the league championship meets.
Â
One of the ultimate goals for each athlete during the indoor season is qualification to the NCAA Indoor Championships scheduled for March 10-11 in College Station, Texas.
