
East Carolina Nabs Two Event Titles At Season-Opening Carolina Cup

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The East Carolina track and field program kicked off its 2017 indoor season Friday night at the Dick Taylor Carolina Cup at the Eddie Smith Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of North Carolina.

The scored meet pitted the Pirates against the host Tar Heels, NC State and Duke. The men finished just five points, 35-30, behind eventual winner North Carolina in third while the women also placed third with 24 points – beating out NC State who compiled a total of 16 points.

Junior Mohogany Baker won ECU's first event title of the evening, capturing the weight throw with a toss of 15.89 meters. That effort currently puts her second in the American Athletic Conference and 26th nationally.

The men's throwing contingent also enjoyed a successful meet as East Carolina took second, third and fourth place in the shot put. Senior Adam Manns placed second in the discipline with a mark of 16.65 meters, good for fourth in the American Conference, while senior Jalen Peterkin and sophomore Evan McCracken followed with throws of 16.12 and 15.86 meters respectively. Manns also finished second in the weight throw, registering an attempt of 16.82 meters.

On the track, the upperclassman duo of D'Ante Yarborough and Vincent Ragland went first and second in the 60-meter hurdles, crossing the line in respective times of 8.19 and 8.27. Those two times are currently second and third in the AAC.

Scoring second and third-place finishes in the 800m were sophomore Stefano Migliorati and senior Pol Solanellas who crossed the finish line in 1:54.63 and 1:55.31. The pair moved into second and fourth on the American Conference performance list.

Also turning in second-place results were junior Jordan Martin (200m) and sophomore Nick Ciaccia (3,000m). Martin posted a time of 22.55 while Ciaccia moved into first place in the conference by recording a time of 8:43.35.
