Heather Macy to be Inducted into Starmount High School Hall of Fame
January 14, 2017 | Women's Basketball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina Women's Basketball Head Coach Heather Macy will be inducted into the Starmount High School Hall of Fame January 21, 2017. The induction ceremony will be held at the Starmount High School Gymnasium at 2:00 p.m. with a reception for inductees and their guests to follow.
Â
"It's a great honor to be inducted into the Hall of Fame," said Macy. "I am very thankful for Starmount High School and everything I learned during my time there. The amazing support system in Yadkin County helped shape a work ethic and passion to help people and I couldn't be more appreciative."
Â
Macy, who's in her seventh year at the helm of East Carolina's women's basketball program, is a 1996 graduate of SHS. During her time playing for the Rams she was a two-time All-Tri County (Elkin Tribune) and All-Northwest 2A Conference player. She was named All-Northwest Honorable Mention by the Winston-Salem Journal and as a senior Macy led her team to a Conference Tournament Championship in 1996.
Â
Macy earned a starting role as a sophomore on the Rams team. Her junior year she improved to shoot 10.2 points and five assists per game. During the Rams championship season, Macy was putting up the best numbers of her high school career, averaging 14 points and six assists per game.
Â
"I had the privilege of coaching Heather (Macy) during her sophomore and junior years," said Coach David Norman. "I could tell then that coaching was in her future as she was always my coach on the floor. Heather always asked why we did things the way we did. During her junior year, I was having some health problems so Joe Sanchez, formally of Wake Forest and the Naval Academy, came to coach as my assistant. She would question him just as she did me!"
Â
Despite Coach Norman's absence on the court her senior year, due to more health issues, Macy still found time to stop by his classroom before school. "We would talk about basketball and what she could do to get better," said Norman.
Â
"It was, and still is, a pleasure to keep up with Heather and her teams," added Norman. "Just like her, her teams work hard to be successful. If you have ever heard her speak at a clinic or seen her coaching on the sidelines, she is still that little blonde ball of fire," he joked.
Â
Macy went on to have a notable collegiate career at Greensboro College. Her 1996 team was inducted into the Greensboro College Athletics Hall of Fame in 2012.
