GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina men's tennis team begins the 2017 season Friday, when the Pirates host North Carolina Central. The season opener is slated for 2:30 p.m. at ECU's Indoor Tennis Facility.
Â
"I always anticipate the start of the season," eleventh year head coach Sean Heinchon said. "Our schedule this spring is competitive and will definitely test our team from the very first match of the season."
Â
With six familiar faces on the squad from a season ago, the Pirates look to improve on last year's 11-13 dual match record.
Â
In the fall, East Carolina opened with a strong showing at its home tournament, the ECU Fall Shootout. Juniors Kasey Countee and Freddie McGeehan then went on to reach the doubles quarterfinals at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regionals on October 17.
Â
"When we got back this spring we came in with this new mindset," Countee said. "It's different than my years past here. We are focused as a team and are excited to get out there and compete again."
Â
During the fall, the Purple and Gold also competed at the Wolfpack Invitational and Charleston Fall Tournament.
Â
East Carolina hosts 11 matches this season beginning with NCCU Friday and Presbyterian Sunday, at 11:30 a.m. The Pirates first road match of the season is set for Wednesday, at George Mason.
