Military Appreciation Day Activities Set For Nov. 11
November 01, 2017 | Football
GREENVILLE, N.C. – ECU Athletics will welcome, recognize and honor all five branches of the United States Armed Forces at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium on Nov. 11 during Military Appreciation Day. Many patriotic activities, including an up-close look at military displays and a coin flip featuring veterans from five different eras of service, highlight the annual event for Pirate fans to enjoy.
Â
ECU hosts Tulane in an American Athletic Conference contest beginning at 7 p.m.
Â
As part of its annual "Tickets For Troops" initiative, approximately 4,000 tickets have been donated to over 15 various military installations or groups including Camp Lejeune, Fort Bragg, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base and more.
Â
Fifty (50) Wounded Warrior Project alumni and their families have been invited to attend the game. In addition to receiving complimentary Pirate Club parking privileges and tickets to watch the Pirates and Green Wave, they will be guests of honor for a pre-game Pizza Hut tailgate on the first base side of Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Â
Prior to the game, fans can get a detailed look at various military displays and vehicles that will be located adjacent to Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
Â
Veterans from World War II, Cold War, Vietnam War, Desert Storm and the Gulf War will participate in a coin toss ceremony before kickoff, while partner Coca-Cola will sponsor a special in-game tribute that promises to capture the hearts of Pirate Nation.
Â
While Scottie Montgomery's program will continue its pre-game tradition of running out on the field with the United States flag, North Carolina flag, ECU flag, American Athletic Conference flag and the P6 flag, the Pirates will also carry flags representing each of the five military branches. An ECU staff member or alumni, who served in the military has been selected to receive the respective flags, which will be handed off in the Boneyard endzone.
Â
Inductees of the ECU Distinguished Military Service Society, who are being honored Friday night during a banquet at the Greenville Hilton, as well as other dignitaries from military bases and installations around the state, will also be recognized during halftime.
Â
The "No Quarter" flag will be raised between the third and fourth quarter by ECU Air Force ROTC commander Lt. Col. April Wimmer in honor of the Air Force's 70th Birthday.
Â
Dowdy Student Stores will have short & long-sleeve t-shirts available for purchase at the stadium on game day with a portion of proceeds benefiting ECU Military Programs.
Â
Because of a recent evening kickoff announcement, a previously-scheduled pre-game flyover by the 169th Fighter Wing of the South Carolina Air National Guard has been cancelled.
