Pirates Finish Sixth At General Hackler Championships

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The East Carolina men's golf team finished in sixth place at the 2017 General Hackler Championships held at the par-72, 7,233-yard Dunes Golf and Beach Club. UPDATE: Due to inclement weather, the tournament was shortened to 36 holes. Â
The Pirates fired an 11-over-par 299 in the first round and a par-288 in the second to total an 11-over-par 587 Saturday and finished ahead of five teams ranked in Golfstat's top-50.
Wake Forest, who is ranked No. 15 by Golfstat, won the team title with a 36-hole score of 15-under-par 561. No. 14 Kent State finished second with a 5-under-par 571 with No. 9 LSU in third-place (-3) followed by No. 34 South Carolina (+5) and Virginia Tech (+10) to round out the top-5.
Junior Tim Conover led East Carolina with an overall score of 1-over-par 145 (77-68), putting him in a tie for 15th individually. After shooting 5-over-par in round one, he opened round two with a birdie on two of the first three holes with pars on five of the next six holes. On the final nine holes, Conover posted three birdies and six pars on the final nine holes.
Freshman Patrick Stephenson finished one stroke behind his teammate, tied for 19th at 2-over-par 146 (77-69). Junior Jackson Spires fired a 3-over-par 147 (73-74) and tied for 28th. Freshman Blake Taylor carded a 5-over-par 149 (72-77) and senior Jack Sides finished with a 22-over-par 166 (83-83).
Wake Forest's Will Zalatoris won individual medalist honors at 9-under-par 135 (68-67).
The Pirates will return to link April 3-4 as they host the East Carolina Intercollegiate at Brook Valley Golf and Country Club.
