GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina University Athletics and the ECU Pirate Club have announced a $1-million leadership commitment from BB&T Corporation. The gift supports the $55-million Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium Southside Renovation Campaign, targeted to be completed in the fall of 2018.
Â
"The incredible commitment made by BB&T is a testament to the corporation's dedication not only to ECU Athletics and the Pirate Club, but its willingness to continue to support economic growth in eastern North Carolina," Director of Athletics Jeff Compher said. "We are very pleased to receive such a meaningful and impactful gift from a great corporation."
Â
Headquartered in Winston-Salem, N.C., BB&T Corporation has been an integral part of North Carolina's economic growth dating back to the 1800s. Today, BB&T is a mission-driven organization with a clearly defined set of values. A Fortune 500 company, the corporation achieves its vision "to create the best financial institution possible" by meeting its responsibilities to clients, employees, shareholders and communities.
Â
"We are extremely grateful to be the beneficiary of such a transformational gift," Pirate Club Executive Director J. Batt shared. "We are building something special, something that all Pirates can be proud of and we are delighted that BB&T has chosen to be a part of it."
Â
This gift comes at the heels of several notable gifts to the Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium Southside Renovation project and provides the continued momentum necessary to carry the project from concept to reality. ECU Athletics' continued effort to provide a world-class experience to its more than 430 student-athletes would not be possible without the tremendous generosity of Pirate supporters like BB&T. With this gift, the Pirate Club has secured commitments toward the Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium Southside Renovation project totaling more than $28-million.
Â
BB&T Regional President Scott Evans stated, "As part of our mission, BB&T works to make the communities in which we work a better place to live. BB&T has supported the Pirate Club and East Carolina University Athletics for many years. The southside renovation of Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium was a perfect project for us to support because it will have a lasting economic impact on all eastern North Carolinians."
Â
As part of a long-term facilities master plan, the $55-million Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium Southside Renovation capital campaign involves the construction of a southside tower resulting in the creation of 1,000 premium seats through the addition of a new Club Level, Loge Boxes, Standard Suites and Founder's Suites. The construction of the new Pirate Club Level, Field Level Club and premium parking spaces will enhance the game-day experience.
Â
Beyond Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium, the project includes improvements to the Ward Sports Medicine Building and Scales Field House to provide needed functional space for Pirate student-athletes. Development of an indoor hitting facility adjacent to Clark-LeClair Stadium is also part of the capital campaign project.
