GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina turned in its second official spring workout with another up-tempo 100-minute practice late Wednesday afternoon on Hight Field at the Cliff Moore Practice Complex.
After opening drills with a pair of acclimation sessions in shorts and helmets, second-year head coach Scottie Montgomery and staff will direct the Pirates' first effort in pads Friday afternoon.
"I would classify it as a good day, especially on the defensive side of the ball," Montgomery said. "Our defense is a little ahead of the offense in the early going and it's the maturity that is helping us in that area. They're definitely showing a little star power."
Similar to Monday's initial practice, the Pirates continued their emphasis of fundamental execution and positional basics throughout Wednesday's workout, which was held in breezy conditions with temperatures in the mid-50s.
After spending the first 40 minutes of the practice keying on individual and positional work, the Pirates opened the team phase with a 10-minute skeleton drill featuring all three quarterbacks on ECU's active roster participating in short-to-mid-range tosses to running backs, tight ends and receiver corps matched up against linebacker and secondary personnel.
"While the defense has enjoyed the early surge, it's also worth noting we have some young guys who are making plays on offense," Montgomery added. "We can really see the depth this spring compared to last year. We simply have more people to play with full No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 teams."
East Carolina will close its first week of action in pads Friday before returning to work with practices on Monday, Wednesday and Friday in preparation for the program's first scrimmage of the spring on Saturday, April 1.
NOTES: East Carolina will conduct its annual Senior Pro Day on Thursday ... A total of 16 players who wrapped up their eligibility after the 2016 campaign, along with 2015 senior ILB Zeek Bigger, will undergo testing in the Murphy Center and on Hight Field in front of an expected group of 40 scouts, coaches and miscellaneous personnel representing the National Football League (NFL), Canadian Football League (CFL) and other professional franchises ... After physical (height, weight, hand, arm) measurements are taken, the former Pirates will be tested in the vertical jump, broad jump and bench press before moving outside for 40-yard dash and short shuttle course times, along with various positional workouts ... Montgomery cited the play of Auburn transfer Tim Irvin in the Pirate secondary at safety (has netted interceptions in back-to-back team segments, returning one for a pick-six).
