GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina completed preparations for its first spring scrimmage with an upbeat 80-minute workout in shells on Hight Field inside the Cliff Moore Complex on Friday.
Â
The session was the Pirates' sixth of the spring practice period and leaves nine more to go, including their second intrasquad contest on April 7 and the annual Purple-Gold Game set for April 22.
Â
Second-year head coach Scottie Montgomery indicated the duration of the live action Saturday would consist of approximately 70 plays, primarily utilizing the top three levels of the Pirates' current internal depth chart. Similar to previous scrimmages, an officiating crew will be on Bagwell Field inside Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium during the entire practice to offer reminders during drill segments before monitoring the scripted snaps.
Â
East Carolina engaged in a 20-minute touch-contact team period towards the end of Friday's workout focusing on first-and-10, third down and redzone situations. Montgomery and his staff then closed out the afternoon with a traditional board drill featuring one-on-one clashes between offensive and defensive personnel.
Â
"I'm looking forward to the opportunity of seeing how we respond and how we execute in some different situations and conditions," Montgomery said. "We've had a physical week and I like the way we have competed, but I also expect it to continue."
Â
After the completion of Saturday's action, ECU will take Sunday off before opening its third week of work on Monday (April 3).
Â
NOTES:
In addition to DE Kiante Anderson and DB Chris Love, who are both out for the entire spring, several other Pirates will be sidelined for Saturday's matchup because of recent injuries - DE Randall Anderson, DE Kendall Futrell, WR Terrell Green, WR Leroy Henley, DB Trevian Hicks, DB Tim Irvin, OL Dalton Montgomery and OL D'Ante Smith … Saturday's scrimmage is closed to the public.
