Pirates Split Saturday Matches with Elon and North Carolina A&T

Greensboro, N.C. – East Carolina (8-9) bounced back with a 7-0 win over North Carolina A&T Saturday afternoon after losing its first match of the day, 5-2, to Elon.

Against Elon, ECU won the doubles point when Celia Ruiz and Lisa Hofbauer won their match at No. 1 doubles and Nastja Rettich and Maria Gomez secured the point with a 7-6 (7-5) win at No. 2 doubles.

Elon went on to win No. 1 through No. 5 singles for the victory. Michelle Castro was the Pirates' lone win in singles action. She defeated Sofia Edo 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) at the bottom of the lineup.

East Carolina bounced back with a sweep over the Aggies in an afternoon match after heading west down I-40.

The Pirates claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 and then cruised through singles action winning five of six matches in straight sets. Castro won both singles sets on the day with a 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 win at No. 4 singles against the Aggies' Klara Smolikova.

East Carolina returns home to host Hampton Thursday at the River Birth Tennis Center. First serve is slated for 2 p.m.
