ECU Announces Potash Corp Aurora Breakfast Of Champions Award Winners

GREENVILLE, N.C. --- East Carolina senior distance runner Pol Solanellas and junior diver Alicia Roueche have been named ECU's Most Outstanding Male and Female Scholar-Athletes for 2016-17. The duo will be honored at the 28th Annual Breakfast of Champions Saturday at the Murphy Center.
The award, sponsored by Potash Corp Aurora, is considered to be the most prestigious honor that is presented annually to a male and female student-athlete. It recognizes academic achievement at ECU, qualities of leadership and service to the university and community.
A four-year letterman from Viladecavalls, Spain, Solanellas earned all-conference honors in multiple events at the 2016 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track And Field Championships as well as the 2017 indoor championships. He also ranks among the school's all-time top-10 in three track and field events and is a two-time member of the AAC All-Academic Team.
Solanellas earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 2016 and is currently pursuing his Master's of Business Administration (MBA). He is also serving as Vice President of the ECU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and working as a graduate assistant in the College of Business. Solanellas has been named to the Chancellor's List each of the previous four semesters and was honored as the 2015-16 Outstanding Graduate of the School of Communication. An active volunteer in the community, he has assisted with service projects for Aces With Autism, Greenville Food Bank and Special Olympics among others.
Solanellas was also named the recipient of the David A. Dosser Pirate Service And Leadership Postgraduate Scholarship.
A native of Greensboro, Roueche is a three-year letterwinner and captain of the ECU diving team. Twice during her career she has been named American Athletic Conference Diver-of-the-Week and qualified for the NCAA Regional Zone Diving Championships. She returned to competition this past season after missing the 2015-16 campaign due to injury. Â
Roueche is pursuing a degree in art with a minor in business administration. She is a member of SAAC and serves as the president of the Textile Design Guild. As a sophomore, she earned a spot on The American All-Academic Team, while receiving the Award of Merit for surface design. She logged more than 42 community service hours during the year, participating in numerous service activities including projects for Cypress Glen Retirement Community and the ECU Youth Arts Festival.
Adam Manns, a thrower on the track and field team, is the recipient of the Walter and Marie Williams Spirit of the East Posteligibility Scholarship, which is given to a student-athlete who demonstrates outstanding commitment to the 'spirit' of East Carolina University. Manns, who completed his bachelor degree requirements in 2016 and is currently pursuing his MBA, owns the second-best marks in ECU history in the shot put and discus, and earned all-conference honors in the weight throw at the 2017 American Indoor Championships.
Dominique Claytor, a member of the ECU women's basketball team, was selected as the recipient of the Kristi Overton Female Scholar-Athlete Award, which recognizes an outstanding female student-athlete from North Carolina that has excelled as a freshman. A native of Winston-Salem, she played in 30 games the season and made 10 starts, leading the Pirates with 28 steals. She owns a cumulative GPA of 3.3 and is intending to major in business management.
The Pat Draughon Postgraduate Scholarship was awarded to senior infielder Charlie Yorgen. He is expected to graduate later this spring and enroll in graduate school during the fall. He is two-time member of The American All-Academic Team and has earned Dean's List recognition in six of the previous seven semesters. He was named to the all-tournament team at the 2016 Charlottesville Regional, going 9-for-15 with a home run, two doubles, four RBI and four runs scored.
The 2016-17 Potash Corp Aurora All-Academic Team, which includes Norrman and Solanellas, will also be recognized Saturday. In addition to the aforementioned duo, the 17-member squad includes: Esteban Araya (men's swimming & diving), Jasmine Dawson (women's track & field), Fredric Lehfeldt (men's tennis), Breana McDonald (women's basketball), Michel Nzege (men's basketball), Lisa Pettersson (women's golf), Vincent Ragland (men's track & field), Caroline Reiser (women's cross country), Rachel Renfrow (soccer), Lydia Ritchie (softball), Sarah Sarjoo (women's tennis), Jackson Sides (men's golf), Austin Teague (football), Travis Watkins (baseball) and Megan Williams (volleyball).
