HOUSTON, Texas – Senior Jorge Montes earned all-conference honors in the 10,000-meter run as the 2017 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships kicked off Friday at the Carl Lewis International Complex on the campus of the University of Houston.

After just two events scored, the men are second with 21 points while the women stand in 10th place with one point.

Montes and sophomore Andrew Ciaccia took third and fourth place in the 10K late Friday night with times of 31:43.21 and 31:45.33. Junior Mohogany Baker captured eighth place in the hammer throw, checking in with a mark of 54.51 meters.

The heptathlon began Wednesday afternoon and senior Aminah Ghaffar currently holds second place with a total of 2,903.

The Pirates had a number of athletes qualify for finals in the men's 800-meter run, men's and women's 200-meter dash and the men's and women's 400-meter hurdles.

Day two of the conference championships for ECU begins at 2:30 p.m. ET Saturday as Ghaffar shoots for the league title in the conclusion of the heptathlon.
