HOUSTON, Texas – The East Carolina women's track and field team posted its highest-ever finish at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships, capturing third place at the Carl Lewis International Complex on the campus of the University of Houston. The men also produced their best-ever result at the event, ending up in fourth place.
Â
"We couldn't be more excited as a coaching staff on how well our teams performed this past weekend," head coach Curt Kraft said. "Both teams performed like true champions for all three days. The conference championships is obviously the meet where you want everything to come together as a whole. We definitely achieved a lot of our goals throughout the weekend. Probably the biggest goals were to improve our finishes from last year's outdoor championships and we accomplished that with both teams. It's hard to put into words how proud I am of both squads. The whole body of work is a big credit to our great athletes and to the coaching staff. Now we have to turn our attention to the regional championships in two weeks."
Cincinnati captured the women's title with 138 points while UConn edged ECU for second place with 107 points to the Pirates' 104.50 points. The Houston men snagged the men's team title with 181.50 points, UConn took second with 136.50 points, Memphis earned third with 112 points and East Carolina was fourth with a total of 109 points.
Â
A pair of Pirates won conference titles as sophomore Stefano Migliorati and junior Mohogany Baker earned gold medals in the 800-meter run and discus events respectively. Migliorati finished in a time of 1:49.49 while Baker tossed the discus 50.56 meters.
Â
In the high jump, sophomore Jonte Leaston and senior Lauren Lubarski each recorded second-place finishes by clearing heights of 2.05 and 1.74 meters. Senior Adam Manns won a silver medal in the discus with a mark of 54.98 meters while classmate Cheyenne Hutchinson also placed second in the 100-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 13.60.
Â
Junior D'Ante Yarborough placed third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.47. He was joined on the podium by the men's 4x400 relay team made up of Jordan Martin, Quay Johnson, Desmond Dowling and Zach Halliday who captured third place with a time of 3:11.40.
