HARTFORD, Conn. – Tim Cate tossed a complete-game shutout to spark UConn to a 6-0 victory over East Carolina in the opener of an American Athletic Conference baseball series Thursday evening at Dunkin' Donuts Park. The Pirates drop to 28-26 and 6-16 in AAC play while the Huskies 30-22 and 13-9.
Â
Cate (4-3) scattered five hits and struck out eight ECU batters in going the distance for the first time this season. Jacob Wolfe (4-4) was tagged with the loss after surrendering five runs on nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work. Davis Kirkpatrick and Ryan Ross combined to throw two scoreless innings in relief and struck out three hitters between them.
Â
Zac Susi rapped out three of UConn's 11 hits while Alex LeFevre drove in three runs to go along with a pair of hits. Travis Watkins notched two of the Pirates' five hits and Dwanya Williams-Sutton reached base twice via two walks.
Â
ECU put six of its nine leadoff batters on base in the contest but hit into three double plays. The Pirates were also unable to record a hit for extra bases as the Huskies limited East Carolina to five singles and four walks.
Â
How It Happened
UConn broke through in the bottom of the third when, with two outs and runners at first and second base, LeFevre deposited a 2-2 pitch over the wall in left center to give his team a 3-0 advantage. The Huskies threatened for more in the frame after a Troy Stefanski single and Aaron Hill walk, but Wolfe buckled down and fanned Chris Winkel to mitigate further damage.
Â
UConn added to its lead in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs on four hits to extend its cushion to 6-0. Winkel sparked the rally with a one-out bunt single before taking second and advancing to third on an infield single off the bat of John Toppa. Consecutive singles by Prato and Susi plated two runs before a Yahn sacrifice fly capped the scoring in the inning.
