Pirates Win Carolina Region ITA Community Service Award
May 18, 2017 | Women's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina's women's tennis team was named the Carolina Region Intercollegiate Tennis Association(ITA) Community Service Award recipient earlier this week. The Pirates logged 633.5 community service hours during the 2016-17 academic year with each member of the squad contributing over 50 hours each.
Â
"This is a well deserved recognition for our players as well as our assistant coach, Kirstin Burgess," head coach Tom Morris said. "Kirstin organized and planned the bulk our initial community service work this year. Our team really enjoyed it and did many of the hours on their own. It really was a win-win-win opportunity for our program. We were able to be involved in projects which would give back to our community, build relationships within our community and grow closer as a team in the process!"
Â
When Hurricane Matthew devastated parts of the Greenville community, the women's tennis team went to work with both hurricane preparation and clean up. Over 280 hours were dedicated to working with Aces for Autism of NC which became the team's adopted organization during the year. The student-athletes helped run weekly clinics and the money that raised was used to pay the team's entry to the Aces tournament where the prize money from the tournament was then donated back to the organization.Â
Â
East Carolina is now put on the national ballot along with the winners from each of the 12 ITA regions and the national award winners will be released on Tuesday, May 23.
