GREENVILLE, N.C. - Former East Carolina multi-purpose back James Summers has signed an undrafted free agent contract with the Arizona Cardinals according to a release by the National Football League organization Tuesday.
Â
Summers provided many offensive playmaking options for ECU as a running back, quarterback and receiver during his two-year career with the Pirates. After initially signing as a pass catcher out of Hinds (Miss.) Community College in 2015, he was forced into action as part-time starting signal-caller during his junior campaign before becoming East Carolina's top running back as a senior in 2016.
Â
In all, Summers accounted for 22 touchdowns, 1,315 rushing yards, 729 passing yards and 1,574 all-purpose yards in 22 contests. He led the Pirates with 869 ground yards on 162 carries last fall, eclipsing the single-game 100-yard mark against USF (114) and Navy (134). Summers became the first player in ECU's modern day history to rush, catch and pass for a score in the same game when he accomplished the feat during the Pirates' 41-3 victory over Connecticut on Oct. 29.
Â
As a junior, he produced East Carolina's first triple-digit rushing effort by a quarterback since 2000 when he racked up a career-best 169 yards against Virginia Tech on Sept. 26 and co-led the unit with a total of eight TD runs over the course of the season.
Â
Summers, along with other Cardinals'Â UDFA signees and the draft class, will report to Arizona's rookie minicamp May 11.
Â
Additional rookie free agent announcements which involve former Pirates will be released once officially confirmed by their respective NFL teams.
