May 22, 2017 | General
GREENVILLE, N.C. --- East Carolina University student-athletes combined to post a 3.02 annual grade point average (GPA) for the 2016-17 academic year – the highest since calculations began in 2013-14 – announced athletics department officials Monday.
Â
Fourteen teams posted above a 3.0 GPA for the 2017 spring semester with 11 squads finishing with over a 3.0 GPA for the 2016-17 academic year. The spring semester GPA of 3.08 was the highest in 15 years of recorded single-term averages.
Â
Thirteen teams own above a 3.0 cumulative GPA, which is also a record high.
A portion of the athletics department's five-year strategic plan includes achieving an annual overall GPA for all student-athletes of 3.0 with all teams at or above the student body average. This year's annual GPA of 3.02 was a 0.05 improvement from last year's average of 2.97.
"Since I arrived four years ago we have had an annual goal for our student-athletes to achieve an average 3.0 GPA for the academic year," ECU Director of Athletics Jeff Compher said. "It has been a challenge and we have been close but this year the student-athletes accomplished that goal. Many thanks to Nita Boyce and our academic support staff, as well as coaches and of course our student-athletes. Now we can start working on our next goal, which is to increase our GPA and lead The American."
Nearly 200 student-athletes posted a 3.0 or higher GPA in the semester with 20 achieving Chancellor's List status with a perfect 4.0. An additional 96 student-athletes made the Dean's List, while 82 were named to the Honor Roll as more than 59 percent of ECU student-athletes earned a 3.0 or above semester GPA.
Four members of the women's swimming and diving program earned distinction on the Chancellor's List with three student-athletes from softball and women's tennis meriting recognition along with two each from men's tennis, women's golf and women's track and field.
All seven members of the women's golf team registered a GPA of 3.5 or better during the semester to produce a 3.80 team GPA, tops among all ECU athletics programs.
