GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina women's tennis team was named the National Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Community Service Award recipient Tuesday afternoon. The Pirates, who logged over 630 community service hours throughout the academic year, are co-winners with the University of Tennessee.
Â
"I would like to thank the ITA for this wonderful recognition," head coach Tom Morris said. "We have a very special group of young ladies and they are so deserving of this award. Our team worked on various community service projects over the course of the year and enjoyed every minute. Congratulations to them!"
Â
The Purple and Gold adopted Aces for Autism in North Carolina as the team's organization and has served over 200 hours with Aces. In addition to Aces, the Pirates worked with Vidant Children's Hospital, Princesses at Play, Stop Hunger Now, Pitt County Animal Shelter, The Special Olympics, The Boys & Girls Club of Eastern North Carolina and various other organizations.
Â
Tennessee held true to its name as the Volunteers spent time working with the Little Smokey's Youth Clinics, Big Brothers, Big Sisters, The Love Kitchen in Knoxville and the Cherokee Country Club's tennis clinic. Additionally, Tennessee's student-athletes volunteered at Tennessee's SportsFest which promotes inclusion of persons with disabilities in sports. In total, UT tallied 93.5 hours of community service.
