Tim Conover Headed To College Grove For NCAA Regional
May 04, 2017 | Men's Golf
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - East Carolina junior Tim Conover is one of 10 individual golfers that have been selected to participate in the College Grove (Tenn.) Regional of the 2017 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship the NCAA Committee announced Thursday.
With his selection, Conover will participate in his third consecutive NCAA postseason event, becoming the second player in school history to compete in three regional championships. He is the fourth player in program history to receive an individual bid joining Mike Teague (1993), Harold Varner (2010) and Eric Brady (2014).
Conover posted five top-10 finishes during the 2016-17 campaign, claiming individual medalist honors at the 2016 Wolfpack Fall Intercollegiate and the 2017 East Carolina Intercollegiate.
Â
During the Wolfpack Fall Intercollegiate, Conover posted the second-lowest 54-hole score in school history with a final tally of 12-under-par 201, shooting 4-under-par 67 in all three rounds.
Conover was dubbed The American Men's Golfer-of-the-Month for October during the fall and was later tabbed the conference's Golfer-of-the-Week following his fourth-place performance at the 2017 Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate.
"I'm very proud of Tim's development as player," ECU Head Coach Press McPhaul said. "It's a very fitting reward and opportunity for him to be able to compete for the national championship."
For the season he owns a team-best 72.15 strokes per round average that ranks as the third-lowest single-season average in the Pirate annals, trailing only Varner's 71.25 in 2010-11 and 71.97 in 2011-12. Last year he stood fourth on the squad with a 73.71 scoring average.
During his three years as a member of the golf team, Conover owns a 73.54 career average in 33 events, which is the fourth-lowest in program history. He has posted two career victories to go along with four top-5 and six top-10 finishes.
Although East Carolina did not receive an at-large bid, with Conover's selection the Pirates will be represented in NCAA Regional competition for the fourth consecutive season and seventh time in the past eight years.
Six regional tournaments will be conducted May 15-17 to determine the championships field. Thirteen teams and ten individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals.
Team and individual medalist titles will be decided May 26-31 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois. Northern Illinois University is the host institution for the 2017 championships.
