July 27, 2017 | Men's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Twelfth-year head men's tennis coach Shawn Heinchon announced that Ian Van Cott has joined the Pirates as the newest assistant coach at ECU.
Â
"We are fortunate to be able to hire Ian," Heinchon said. As we got to know him it became clear that he would be a great fit for ECU. Ian was a great college player at Tulane and helped the Green Wave become a perennial Top-25 program. There is no doubt we will benefit from his playing experience."
Â
Prior to joining the Pirates, Van Cott served as a volunteer assistant coach at Princeton for the 2016-17 year. During his time there, the Tigers posted a 14-12 record while Alex Day and Luke Gamble reached the NCAA Doubles Championship with an automatic bid earning a No. 59 national ranking as the top Ivy League team in the May 4 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings.
Â
He first gained coaching experience working at Sportime Schenectady in Schenectady, N.Y., where he organized tennis camp for over 50 kids ages 5-17. While at Sportime, he worked with some of the top boys and girls in the country, including the No. 6 fourth grade girl in the United States and the No. 5 10-and-under boy in the USTA's Eastern Section.
Â
Van Cott was a four-year letterwinner at Tulane and posted a 52-46 career singles record playing primarily at the No. 5 and No. 6 spot for the Green Wave. He went 43-20 overall in doubles and 28-19 in dual matches. As a senior, his leadership helped guide Tulane to the NCAA Tournament where the team won its first NCAA match in over 11 years.
Â
He earned his Bachelor of Science in psychology from Tulane in 2016.
