GREENVILLE, N.C. – Senior Bakri Abushouk tied the ECU record in the men's 8K Friday morning as the Pirates competed in the 44th Annual Paul Short Run on the campus of Lehigh University. Both the men and women finished 29th in a field of over 40 teams.
Â
"We had a very solid performance from our men and women today," cross country head coach Josey Weaver said. "We had six personal records on the Men's side including Bakri Abushouk's school-record performance and our women had five personal bests including Grace Sullivan's No. 2 all-time mark. I like where we are right now but love where we are heading. We are four weeks out from our conference championships and our trust in one another continues to grow as a team. We must stay hungry and not get satisfied with these fast times from this past weekend. If we continue to work, then I think we are in for a good showing at our AAC Championships."
Abushouk's time of 23:53 matched Kyle MacKenzie's time ran in 2003 at the N.C. Intercollegiate Division I Men's Cross Country Championships at Overton's Lake Kristi. Abushouk placed 14th overall and was the top runner for ECU for the third meet in a row. Junior Nick Ciaccia put up a personal-best 8K time of 25:02 and finished 131st.
Â
On the women's side, junior Grace Sullivan ran the second-fastest 6K time in program history, crossing the finish line in 20:37 to set a new personal best. Sophomore Mikayla Stoudt clocked the seventh-fastest time in the school annals as well, running a career-best 21:22 to place 113th.
Â
ECU will take the next two weeks to prepare for its home meet – the Pirate Invitational. The event is scheduled for Oct. 13 at Overton's Lake Kristi.
