
Pirates Win Five Events At Season-Opening Carolina Cup

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The ECU track and field program took on a solid field at its season-opening competition, winning five events at the Dick Taylor Carolina Cup inside the Eddie Smith Field House.

The Pirates competed against in-state opponents NC State, Duke and the host Tar Heels. ECU put up some of the top times in the American Athletic Conference during its opening meet.

Junior distance runner Stefano Migliorati picked up a pair of event titles in the 800-meter run and the mile run while senior Galissia Cause captured the shot put crown and junior Hakeem Horton won the long jump. Additionally, senior Ryan Davis topped the field in the shot put while placing second in the weight throw.
Cause broke the school record in the shot put, putting up a total of 15.68 meters to best her old program-record mark of 15.48 meters.

"It was great to finally get our first meet of the year under our belts." Director of Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "We had lots of positive things happen, and at the same time have a lot of work to do. Now that we are back in session and classes have begun it will be great to get back to work and get back into our daily routines.

"The goal for both teams from this point forward is to continue to get better every day," Kraft added." We want to be at our best at the AAC Championships at the end of February. We will have a great week of practice and get ready for VMI next weekend."

Senior Sarah Hamon currently leads the American Athletic Conference in the 3,000-meter run after posting a time of 10:01.24 to place fourth in the 3,000-meter run. Migliorati also ranked second in the league in the mile run and third in the 800m. Davis turned in the second-best mark in the shot put while sophomore Nuria Tillo-Prats owns the second-fastest 800m time among AAC athletes. Additionally, senior Galissia Cause ranks second in the shot put.

With one competition under its belt, ECU will head to Lexington, Va., next weekend for the VMI Invitational.
