MIAMI, Fla. – The ECU softball team lost both ends of a doubleheader at the Felsberg Invitational Saturday, falling to Hofstra 4-0 and St. John's 9-1 in six innings.

How it Happened (Game One): Hofstra scored a single run in four different innings on the way to the shutout. Sarah Edwards got the scoring started in the top of the first with a RBI single before Pirate starter freshman Erin Poepping kept the Pride off of the scoreboard the next two frames. ECU recorded its first hit of the game in the bottom of the fourth via a single by freshman outfielder Tyler King, but the Pirates could not muster a run as Hofstra put the contest away with single runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings. Poepping dropped to 1-1 in the circle while Sarah Cornell improved to 1-1.

How it Happened (Game Two): St. John's jumped on top early in the game, scoring five runs on four hits in the top of the first inning to cruise to the six-inning victory. Marissa Rizzi recorded a three-run double in the frame. Christina Melendez added a run to the Red Storm lead in the top of the second with a solo home run before ECU RHP Whitney Sanford settled in and held St. John's scoreless in the next two innings. St. John's scored three unearned runs in the fifth and sixth frames to pull ahead 9-0, forcing the Pirates to score twice in the home half of the sixth to extend the game. Doubles by King and redshirt sophomore infielder Tate McClellan cut the deficit to 9-1, but a fly ball to center ended the contest. Sanford dropped to 0-2 with the loss while Madison Morris improved to 1-1 with the complete-game effort.
