Bill Holland was one of the first of many great athletes to come throught the East Carolina athletic program.
In 1935, Holland played semi-pro baseball as a pitcher in the Angier Tobacco State League. Doc Mathis, baseball coach at East Carolina Teachers College, was also on the team and was influential in Holland's decision to enter ECTC in 1935.
In his freshman year, Holland played right tackle in football and pitched on the baseball team. After his playing career for East Carolina Teacher's College, Holland signed with the Washington Senators and played with several of their farm league teams. In 1939, he finished the season on the Senators roster. Holland was East Carolina's first major league baseball player.
