Richard Carlton Barnes was a member of the 1962-65 East Carolina baseball teams. Barnes played three years at ECU under fellow ECU Hall of Fame member Earl Smith. In 1962, Barnes led the Pirates with a team-best .472 batting average. He also led the team in hitting as a senior in 1965 with a .447 average
The team's Most Valuable Player in 1965, he received All-Carolina Conference honors in 1962 and was a three-time all-state selection. He helped the Pirates to a final national ranking of 23rd in 1964.
Barnes graduated magna cum laude from East Carolina in 1965 as a physical education major. He went on to play professionally in the Cincinnati Reds organization from 1965-68. After his baseball career ended, Barnes returned to East Carolina where he received his master's in 1970.
