Burke has the lowest career earned run average in school history at 1.33. During his three years as a member of the varsity baseball team from 1966-68, Burke compiled a career record of 17-4 and helped the Pirates to a pair of Southern Conference titles in 1966 and '68. As a junior in 1967, he earned All-Southern Conference and all-state honors as he led the Pirates with six wins and 46 strikeouts. He also recorded the third-lowest single-season ERA in school history the following season, 0.91.
