Tobin earned six All-America honors in diving from 1966-68 with outstanding performances on both the one-meter and three-meter boards. He is a former varsity record holder on the three-meter boards and was the first recipient of the Glen Dyer Memorial Scholarship in 1968. He qualified for the AAU Outdoor Nationals in 1967 and '68, and participated in the 1968 Olympic Trials. After entering graduate school as ECU, Tobin served as diving coach the 1969 and '71-73 seasons.
