Jacob Smith collected All-America honors in five events during the 1959 NAIA National Championships, earning the silver medal in the 100-yard freestyle and the bronze in the 50 free. He also swam leadoff for the 1959 national championship 400 free relay team. The following year, Smith claimed the bronze medal in the 100 free and helped the 400 free relay team to a second-place finish.
