An All-State performer in basketball at East Carolina, Warren "Sonny" Russell scored 1,653 points during his memorable career.
A member of the All-North State Conference basketball team from 1949-53, Russell became only the third man in North State Conference history to be named to the team for four years in a row.
Russell also competed in baseball for the Pirates, batting in the neighborhood of .400 for three years in a row. In 2000, the ECU Athletic staff officially retired Russell's basketball jersey, No. 14.
