October 26, 2002 | Volleyball
On Friday, October 25, the Pirates faced the Elon Phoenix (7-19), falling by a score of 0-3 in three close games (25-30, 27-30, 21-30).
The Pirates came out strong in game one as they took the early lead at 6-5. After the kill by Elon's Maria LaBrutto to even the score at six, the Pirates never reclaimed the lead in the first game. Elon scored the next three points, clinching the game.
In the second game, Elon looked like it was going to make quick work of East Carolina as the Phoenix jumped out to a 17-9 lead. However, ECU fought back to even the score at 26. East Carolina would score only one more point, and Elon came away with a win in the second game.
In the third and final game East Carolina won the first point, but would not lead again in the third game, and the Pirates dropped the third straight game, and were swept by the Phoenix. The Pirate's Alexis Jones led in kills with 12 and Sarah Vick added nine digs. Jessica Vick accumulated 16 assists and four digs.
On Saturday, October 26, the Pirates faced Charlotte (13-11, 4-3 C-USA) in a Conference USA match-up, and fell by a score of 3-1 (26-30, 28-30, 30-28, 28-30).
After winning games one and two, the 49ers felt confident going into game three, but the Pirates came from an 11-6 deficit to win the game 30-28. Charlotte, however, would win game four, and hand the Pirates their second straight loss.
Pam Ferris led the team with 13 kills. Robyn Drewes had 12 and Jones had 11. Jones led the team with a .550 hitting percentage, and had two service aces on the night.
The Pirates will host Campbell University this Tuesday night, October 29 at 7:00 p.m. The match will be played at Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum. The Pirates and Camels faced each other earlier in the year. ECU came away with the 3-1 win.
