November 15, 2002 | Volleyball
The Pirates dominated play in game one of the match, taking a lead early in the game. The Horned Frogs and ECU would swap leads on and off throughout the game, never allowing the lead to go above two points. With Pam Ferris serving, the Pirates took their final lead of the game, going up 22-21. Under Ferris? serves, the Pirates scores nine consecutive points to take the win 30-21.
Game two started out similar to the first with the two teams trading off leads within a couple of points. TCU soon gained a three point lead on a Robin Drewes attack error, but would hold the advantage for a small amount of time, as East Carolina would tie things up at 19. Again the teams would swap leads, but TCU earned the point advantage on an attack error by Vick and would hold on to the lead, eventually winning 30-27.
The Frogs went up 3-0 before East Carolina put a point on the board in game three, but the Pirates would step up the pace and tie the game up at five all. As in the previous two games, TCU and East Carolina swapped leads within one or two points of the other team. With the game tied at 20, TCU gained its final lead on a Vick service error. The Horned Frogs would outscore the Pirates 10 to 6 in the rally to take game three 30-26.
East Carolina found itself up by as much as five points in game four, and held on to the large lead for a majority of the game. It appeared as though ECU would rally back from the two game loss to tie things up at two games each, but TCU went on a scoring binge and took away the lead and the win 30-28.
Drewes had 19 kills on the night, a season high, and Katie Jannusch added 10 of her own. Johanna Bertini was in double figures defensively for the Pirates with 12 digs on the evening. Jessica Vick and Erica Wilson split duties in the setter position with 28 and 27 assists respectively. Sarah Vick led the team with three service aces.
The Pirates had a combined hitting percentage of .236 on the night, and statistically beat out TCU in all but one category. East Carolina will host the University of Houston tomorrow night, November 16 in the final game of the 2002 season. East Carolina will be honoring seniors Drewes and Denise Hartnett in a pregame ceremony. The match is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start.
