November 15, 2002 | Football
Both players were second team selections.
They are the first ECU players to receive the honor since Keith Arnold and Ken Burnette earned Academic All-District in 1991.
To qualify for the award, a player must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key reserve on the field. Both academic and athletic accomplishment are considered in the voting, which is conducted by CoSIDA membership. District III includes all Division I and I-AA schools in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.
Rimpf, a junior, is an ECU Honor Roll and Dean`s List student with a 3.32 GPA as an accounting major. On the field, he was a 2002 Preseason All-America selection by Football News and is on the official watch lists for this year`s Outland Trophy and Rotary Lombardi Award. He was a first team All-Conference USA selection last season. Earlier this year, Rimpf was one of just 11 Division I players in the nation named to the AFCA Good Works Team in recognition of outstanding community service and civic involvement.
Hourigan, also a junior, holds a 3.84 cumulative GPA while pursuing his BSA/MBA, a five-year combined degree in accounting. He has made the Dean`s List five of his six semesters and the Chancellor`s List (for 4.0) once. He was named to the 2001 PCS Phosphate All-Academic Team for having the team`s best GPA. On the field, he is the team`s sixth-leading receiver this season with 15 catches for 165 yards and has scored one touchdown. His top game came at Wake Forest, where he had a team-high five catches.
The announcement brings ECU`s total Academic All-District selections to three for the 2002-03 academic year. Earlier this month, Kristin Hoyle of women`s soccer was announced as a first team Academic All-District pick.
