GREENVILLE, N.C. ? East Carolina senior Kay Livick ran a personal best time of 21:26.9 in the 6,000m to lead the Lady Pirates to a 15th place finish at the 2002 NCAA Southeast Regional Cross Country Championships hosted by ECU at Lake Kristi Saturday. Sophomore Kyle MacKenzie was the top finisher for the Pirate men`s team as he finished the 10,000m course in a time of 31:35.3 as ECU finished in 22nd place.
Wake Forest won the women`s team title to advance to the NCAA Championships at Indiana State on Nov. 25, as did NC State on the men`s side. The Lady Wolfpack also advanced to the NCAAs as they finished in second place. William & Mary also scored a second place finish during the men`s race to earn a spot at the NCAAs.
Shalane Flanagan of North Carolina claimed the women`s individual title with a time of 19:17.0 as did Clemson`s Jason Meany in the men`s competition with a time of 29:50.3.
"Despite feeling under the weather Kay was outstanding for us once again as was Kyle," said Pirate head coach Len Klepack. "I thought everything went very well this morning despite the conditions. We owe a great deal of thanks to Parker Overton, 'Choo' Justice and Lee Workman for helping us put on a great event. "
Weather conditions were less than adequate as a steady rainfall continued throughout the morning.
Livick placed 45th overall, while MacKenzie finished in 48th position. Senior Kellie Litten also claimed a top 100 finish as she placed 86th with a time of 22:21. Nearly 200 competitors participated in the race from 25 men`s teams and 26 women`s teams.
