Pirate Football Prepares for Scrimmage
August 16, 2002 | Football
The Pirates spent about one and one-half hours on Bagwell Field at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium this morning and returned for a slightly shorter practice this afternoon. The normal midday session was cut as Logan wanted to allow his players more rest in preparation for the team's second and final preseason scrimmage on Saturday afternoon.
"We're looking tired and didn't practice as well as we need to this morning," Logan said following the day's first session. "Mentally, we've got to get clued back in and go out and work better. We've got some things we want to accomplish in tomorrow's scrimmage. I'd like to see the perimeter of the offense coordinate in a better fashion. We'll go tomorrow and find out if we can get it done or not."
The Pirate starters left the field a period early this morning to allow the team's second units to participate in an 18-play live scrimmage. Logan termed the mini-scrimmage performance "not bad."
Two projected starters--outside linebacker Christshawn Gilliam and flex end Ben Thomas--continue to be sidelined with ankle injuries, but both will likely be recovered in time for the season opener, Aug. 31 at Duke. Meanwhile, redshirt freshman Sakeen Wright, who was previously practicing at quarterback, and Mar'ques Woolford, a true freshman who was recruited as a defensive back, have been moved to flex (tight end) to provide depth at that position.
With two weeks remaining before the regular season opener, the Pirates will have a short morning practice on Saturday, then prepare for a two-quarter scrimmage in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium in the afternoon. The scrimmage is closed to the public and media.
