ECU women's soccer is the first sport to host intercollegiate competition in the 2002-03 athletic year. The Pirates kick things off with a home match against High Point on Friday, Aug. 30, at Bunting Field. ECU will also have a home match on Sunday, Sept. 1, against Kent State at 1 p.m. Fourth-year head coach Rob Donnenwirth brings his team into its second season of Conference USA play led by one of the league's top forwards, senior Amanda Duffy (Jacksonville, N.C./Dixon High)
MEN'S SOCCER (0-0 overall, 0-0 C-USA)
The Pirates open their 2002 campaign with at the Ohio State/Nike Classic in Columbus against Friday, August 30. After facing Ohio State in its season opener, ECU will square off against another Big 10 foe on Sunday afternoon, Penn State. The Nittany Lions, which advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament a year ago, are the first of three preseason ranked opponents that ECU will face this season. Pirate Head Coach Devin O'Neill served as an assistant coach at Ohio State for two seasons prior to being named head coach at ECU.
VOLLEYBALL (0-0 overall, 0-0 C-USA)
After being picked to finish 10th in the Preseason C-USA Coaches Poll, the East Carolina volleyballers will open the 2002 season this weekend in the William and Mary Invitational in Williamsburg, Va. The Pirates will face the host school on Friday, August 30, at 1:00 p.m., and will then take on Fresno State at 5:00 p.m. On Saturday, August 31, the women will hit the court at 11:00 and take on Furman, and then face Radford at 5:00 p.m. ECU's first home match of the season will be on September 28 against conference foe Marquette.
CROSS COUNTRY
The ECU cross country team will compete in its first of five meets at Overton's/Lake Kristi on Friday. The Pirates will compete in a dual meet against Virginia Commonwealth in the Lake Kristi Sundown Invitational beginning at 6 p.m. The women's squad is led by senior Kay Livick (Richmond, Va./St. Catherine's High) and junior Johanna Allen (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac High), while Ricardo Bell (Havelock, N.C./Havelock, N.C.) is lone senior on the men's squad.
