Steve Logan's Media Luncheon Quotes
August 26, 2002 | Football
Opening comments from Coach Logan:
"It's game week and we have practiced all we can practice. We have tomorrow and Wednesday where we'll go out and do a little more work. Thursday and Friday we'll do a lot of polish-type stuff. Then we'll get on the bus and go play."
"We have a lot of questions at really key positions on our football team that will be answered on Saturday night--like inside linebacker, quarterback and places where we have had guys performing for an extended period of time that have graduated now. The same goes true for the running backs as well. We've got some new faces that are going to show up. We're going to ask kids that have played 12 to 13 snaps a game to be starters for us and play a lot of football, as well as some guys who have played no football at the collegiate level. We are going to find out a lot about ourselves over the next six to seven days."
On preparing for Duke's defense:
"They hired someone from Georgia Tech and we have looked at some of Tech's film. We're trying to get some type of idea of what types of packages and schemes he likes and try to figure out the way he thinks. We have shown our players a multitude of fronts that he has shown before and we will have to go out an do a lot of coaching on game day."
On the quarterback situation:
"When starting out with a new quarterback, we like to keep things pretty limited. We'll be calling most of the plays for Paul and give him some checks to see how he does. The better he does the more he'll get. But starting out we'll try to keep things in the coaches' hands to limit any damage. Ideally we go to the line of scrimmage with three football plays just like last year when we averaged 32 points a game. We will run it, throw it or check out of it completely into a play we practiced during the week. So when the quarterback comes along, that's how fast we'll go with his growth."
On Paul Troth if he went down to injury:
"We will probably go with Desmond Robinson to see how he does. On those same lines, our thinking is if Paul does not perform, then Richard Alston will be our quarterback pretty quick."
On player injuries:
"Christshawn Gilliam ran on Sunday's helmet-only practice, but is doubtful for this week's game along with Ben Thomas."
On what contributes to lack of success in opening season games:
"Usually who we play. In the 11 years I have been here, we have had West Virginia and Tennessee and that will make your opening day record not too good."
On the tight end position:
"When our offense is expressing itself properly, the tight end should be the leading receiver on the team. That is what we have lacked in the two years. Tutu Moye has been an instant hit since last spring and I'm really excited and comfortable with what he brings to the table. He is maybe a three-way guy where we can play the tight end position, we can flex him out and put him in the backfield. If that is the case and he has done those things successfully, at the end of Saturday our offense will be that more difficult to deal with. Mar'ques Woolford, a true freshman, will develop into the tight end/flex end but will see limited time depending on Moye's success."
