Newcomers Take Practice Field for First Time
August 07, 2002 | Football
The newest Pirates completed two 90-minute sets of drills on ECU's practice fields under the watchful eye of 11th-year head coach Steve Logan.
"I've gone back and looked at the performances of the incoming classes of the past two years and this is, without question and based on 40-yard dash times and pro agility times, the fastest class we've gotten hold of," Logan said following the afternoon practice session. "They've proven it on the field. They're very agile, have a lot of speed, and the nice thing about it is that with the speed, there's height. A bunch of these kids are really doing well."
Most of the afternoon practice session focused on fundamental skills at specific positions and some limited plays from scrimmage. With ECU's veterans reporting to campus this afternoon and the annual preseason media day on the slate for Thursday, the newcomers' next practice will be on Friday when the first of the full-squad three-a-days begin.
ECU's newcomers reported on Sunday and have spent most of their first three days on campus getting physical examinations and evaluations, participating in academic orientation, and getting fitted for equipment.
The Pirates open their 2002 season on August 31 at Duke (6 p.m.).
