Preseason Football Practice Swings Into Full Gear
August 09, 2002 | Football
Under perfect practice conditions with clear skies and a light breeze, the Pirates were slated to spend a combined four-plus hours on the practice fields. Individual position drills and special teams formations were covered in the morning session while more scrimmage-oriented plays were the focus of the midday practice. The Pirates are scheduled to return to the field late this afternoon for their longest session of the day, during which the offensive and defensive units will see some head-to-head matchups.
"We had a good 60 minutes this morning and went 70 minutes in the noon practice and got some group drills done. We're seeing a lot of carryover from the spring," Head Coach Steve Logan said following the midday session. "There always is [a lot of enthusiasm] at any camp on the first day of practice. Everybody's hopes and aspirations are very high. All across the country, everybody's 0-0. It's a new start. What you've got to do is prepare them and go win the game and keep the enthusiasm going."
ECU will maintain a similar practice schedule throughout the weekend before donning full gear on Monday. The Pirate players will participate in the annual Meet the Pirates Night on Saturday. The event, held at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium, is expected to draw nearly 700 fans who will dine with the players and get autographs and photos. Advance reservations are required for the dinner, but the autograph and photo session, which will begin at approximately 8 p.m. on Bagwell Field, is free and open to the public.
East Carolina will open its 2002 football season on Saturday, August 31 at Duke (6 p.m.).
