Diamond Pirates Ranked No. 30 By NCBWA
January 13, 2003 | Baseball
It is the second preseason ranking of 2003 for the Pirates, who were listed at No. 36 by Collegiate Baseball in December.
The team opens spring practice this Saturday.
ECU is coming off a 2002 season which saw the Pirates finish 43-20-1, advance to NCAA regional play for the fourth straight year, and win the Conference USA Tournament, the school's first C-USA title in any sport. East Carolina had a final ranking of 24th in the USA Today Baseball Weekly/ESPN coaches poll last season.
East Carolina is one of two C-USA teams ranked in the NCBWA's preseason top 35. Defending regular season champ Houston is No. 7.
The Pirates will begin their first season under new head coach Randy Mazey on Feb. 14 against Western Carolina. Mazey's club returns 21 lettermen from last season, including 10 pitchers and four regular starting position players.
The NCBWA preseason poll is selected by representatives of the organization that span seven difference conferences and top independents among the 284 baseball-playing schools in the NCAA Division I ranks.
