FORT WORTH, Texas -- TCU broke open a close game with a second half spurt and coasted to a 85-46 win over visiting East Carolina on Friday night in Conference USA women's basketball action.
The Horned Frogs led by only five, 34-29, at halftime, but exploded on a 28-2 run midway of the second half to open up a commanding lead.
TCU improves to 8-9 overall and 1-3 in C-USA play, while the Lady Pirates drop to 8-8 and 0-3.
Sophomore Jennifer Jackson was the only Lady Pirate to score in double digits as she tallied a game-high 16 points. Sandora Irvin led TCU with 14.
TCU began with a 10-3 run to start the game and led by as many as 11 in the first half (18-7 with 12:47 to play). The Pirates, however, outscored the Lady Frogs 7-0 over the next three and a half minutes to make it 18-14. With 1:41 left in the first half, East Carolina cut the TCU lead to just two on a bucket by LaToya Horton. Senior Tricia Payne drained a three-pointer with 1:18 to go to push the TCU halftime advantage to five.
The Lady Frogs started strong in the second half, outscoring ECU 10-5 in the first five minutes of play. Strong inside play by TCU combined with ECU's poor shooting helped push the Lady Frogs' margin to 14 with 10:26 left. Pirate Jennifer Jackson scored on a lay-up at the 9:50 mark, but the game was all Frogs after that. For just over six minutes (9:50 to 3:32) the Lady Frogs scored 20 unanswered points to make the game 76-43. TCU allowed the Pirates to score just 17 points for the entire second half.
ECU continues its tour of the Lone Star State with a stop in Houston for another C-USA tilt on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET.
